Are brainstorming techniques random activities?

It would be incorrect to say that all brainstorming techniques that are used today are random activities that are carried out without a proper purpose. They are used only when there is a need for new ideas and for improvement on situations within a specified environment. One cannot use the same  brainstorming techniques  that one uses in a product development situation and in a human resource problem. Each of these situations needs a different way of approaching the problem. Hence, it is necessary for the management to know the situation well, before employing any brainstorming techniques that are common.
