Whether you like the occasionally Dalek-like quality of GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) digital cellular telephones or not, the ability to roam between countries is a great benefit if you are a traveler. Now comes news that GSM is broadening its free live satellite images applications. The last few weeks have seen two developments that will add to the momentum of GSM, the digital standard used in Australia, Asia and Europe but not the United States.* Siemens has secured a $US40 million deal with the Iridium consortium to supply GSM technology to the yet-to-be-built satellite phone systems.* De Te Mobil, a German GSM service provider, is testing GSM for the collection of motorway tolls.
